Half of 2025 is almost over and finally, we have exciting projects to look forward to this month! While it is a fresh start for Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan with Sitaare Zameen Par, the much-debated series Squid Game is finally coming to an end with season 3, all in this month! Although Squid Game might be coming to an end, it is not yet a full stop, for the director had always hinted at a spin-off, and now, he shares an update. Hwang Dong-hyuk shares an exciting new update on whether the spin-off is actually happening. Here's what he said...
Hwang Dong-hyuk did confirm that Squid Game spin-off is in the works, and even left hints while speaking at 2025 Gotham Television Award. He, however, shared no particularly new update on the spin-off. The director re-asserted that the spin-off would focus on what happened in the three years span between Squid Game seasons 1 and 2. "If I make a spin-off, it will be a story happening between season 1 and 2. There was a three years gap between season 1 and 2, so I want to show what they did for those times," is what he said.
The director did not leave further comments but fans sure are left wondering whether the spin-off(s) will centre around some of the most interesting characters or it would give us a generic viewpoint of how every character got pulled into the dangerous world. If centred around a character, the popular demand is Gong Yoo (Guardian: The Lonely and Great God), who plays the Salesman in Squid Game. It was his appearance and disappearance in the first episode of Squid Game 2 that became the highlight of the season. Former BigBang member T.O.P, who played Thanos, also became a talking point in the season, so we might see him make a return (he was a part of season 3 trailer launch as well), or Bad Papa actor Lee David might just turn out to be one of the VIPs as predicted. But for now, the director has kept his mouth sealed on where the spin-off could lead to.
Squid Game season 3 is grabbing eyeballs for various reasons, the main being how Lee Jung-jae's Gi-hun made it as the VIP in the game. He came face-to-face with the Frontman, and that might be the turning point for the season, since Gi-hun was already working with the Frontman's brother (played by Midnight actor Wi Ha-joon). Thus, Gi-hun might be the one who played the bigger game, but all will be unveiled once Squid Game season 3 would be out on Netflix on June 27. How excited are you for the season?
