Is Tharun Moorthy scaling up film with Fahadh Faasil, Torpedo, after success of Thudarum?

Thudarum maker Tharun Moorthy is currently working on a thriller called Torpedo, written by his regular collaborator, actor Binu Pappu, with Fahadh Faasil and Naslen in the lead. After the success of Thudarum, all eyes were on Tharun about his next move. The filmmaker was reportedly in talks with Asif Ali for a project, but then announced Torpedo instead.

Turns out, this decision was made because Torpedo was the film that Tharun was set to make when the offer to direct Mohanlal came up. In a recent conversation with News18Kerala, Tharun said that it was producer Ashiq Usman who told the filmmaker to go ahead and work with Mohanlal and offered to put his film on hold. “Ashiq had the foresight that if the Mohanlal film clicks and becomes an industry hit, it would be beneficial for his film,” said Tharun.

Tharun Moorthy on Torpedo: Will only do what the script demands

Now that he has returned to Torpedo, will the film undergo any change given the success of his last film, like, for instance, in terms of the scale of the project? “No, I will not allow such changes. I believe that you should do only what a script demands. Every script has a core value, which drives you to making it as a film. One should not mess around with that,” he says, adding that the film is set in Bengaluru and will be different from all his earlier movies.

The filmmaker adds that his previous filmography plays no part in audience’s deciding whether or not to watch his next. Instead, they will make a judgement call based on what they see in the promotional material and interviews, he reckons. For Torpedo, Tharun is collaborating with several technicians for the first time in his career, including music director Sushin Shyam and cinematographer Jimshi Khalid.

Meanwhile, on September 5, on the occasion of Thiruvonam, Tharun had taken to social media about his plans to work on a sequel of one of his films. While he did not reveal which one will get a new chapter, netizens were quick to declare that it would be Operation Java, as the filmmaker has earlier discussed the possibility of turning it into a franchise.
