Two episodes of Seo Kang-joon's Undercover High School are out, thus giving one and all an idea of what the series is all about. The drama is often touted as Korea's version of Main Hoon Na, and now that it is out on OTT, we finally have the answer to whether Undercover High School really is Korean Main Hoon Na (originally featuring Shah Rukh Khan in Farah Khan’s directorial). Here's what we can say for now...
Seo Kang-joon enters Undercover High School with two intentions - to serve face and entertain. That was the exact purpose with Shah Rukh Khan's Main Hoon Na. In short, the idea for Undercover High School was probably adapted from Main Hoon Na, but not everything is the same.
The Bollywood-esque action and comedy surely set the tone for Undercover High School appearing like Main Hoon Na were made in Korea. The senseless comedy also takes you back to what Hindi films in general are like. In that sense, Undercover High School is very much like Main Hoon Na.
Undercover High School is set as per Korean standards. It is made for those who consume K-Dramas regularly. Thus, there are a lot of Korean references. The mother being a nag and savage both at the same time, the bravery at the front while being scared on the inside and the bullying have all been a part of K-Dramas over the years, and the trend continues with Undercover High School. Moreover, the storyline has changed from the male lead falling for the female lead, to her falling first. And the very fact that he didn't set out to search for his own family in the college, make the two projects drastically different.
