Three years ago, after it was revealed that there would be a third instalment in the KGF saga, the big buzz in industry was that Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan was being roped in for the Prashant Neel directorial. There was no confirmation or denial about a possible collaboration from either party, but with KGF-3 still remaining a distant dream, and Hrithik busy with other projects, chances seemed dim. Until today, when Hombale Films officially announced that a project with Hrithik is on the cards after all.
The Kantara makers have not revealed any other details about the film, in terms of cast and crew, but stated that a tale of grit, grandeur and glory is set to unfold. The collaboration is part of Hombale Films’ commitment to deliver an experience that is both powerful and timeless. Recognising the banner’s efforts to consistently present unique stories on the big screen, Hrithik added that he’s looking forward to the partnership and in delivering a cinematic experience for audiences. Interestingly, in 2022, speculation was that Hrithik would either be roped in as the villain in KGF3 or to join Yash's Rocky Bhai as an ally. The third option was that the Bollywood star would be given a ganster universe of his own.
Hrithik’s current slate includes War 2, in which he is joined by Jr NTR, which releases on August 14. It was recently reported that both KVN Productions and Hombale Films were bidding for the distribution rights of the film in Karnataka, and this latest development should indicate who has won this round. He's also directing and starring in the fourth instalment of his superhero franchise, Krrish .
In late 2022, Hombale Films had announced its intention to make 5-6 films a year in all south languages, with an investment of Rs 3000 crore earmarked for a 5-year plan. In the time since, the banner ventured into Malayalam cinema with Dhoomam, Telugu with Salaar Ceasefire and Tamil with Raghu Thatha . A collaboration with Sudha Kongra was announced, but is yet to take off. The production house’s last release was the Kannada superhero movie Bagheera, with Roaring Star Sriimurali.
Next up will be the prequel to Kantara – Kantara Chapter 1, which is expected to be in theatres on October 2, 2025. The Salaar sequel, Shouryanga Parvam will begin as soon as Prashant winds up his film with Jr NTR. The banner is also said to be producing Rakshit Shetty’s Ulidavaru Kandanthe prequel, Richard Anthony.
