Amazon Prime Video India debuted the official trailer of Jalsa, a thriller starring Vidya Balan and Shefali Shah. The Amazon Original Movie is the first time the two acting powerhouses are sharing the screen space.

The trailer release coincides with Balan’s Kahaani, also a thriller, directed by Sujoy Ghosh.

Balan is introduced as a hot-shot journalist named Maya, who always asks uncomfortable questions and when a high-profile hit-and-run case makes the news, she and a subordinate (Vidharthi Bandi) are on the trail to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, Shefali Shah plays a cook Rukshana who works for Maya. There seems to be some kind of mystery brewing in her life as well that crosses over into her employer’s life.

Jalsa has “secrets and lies, truths and deceit and a life-altering incident that ruffles the world around them,” according to a press release.

Also part of the ensemble cast are Rohini Hattangadi, Mavan Kaul, Iqbal Khan, Srikant Mohan, Shafeen Patel and Surya Kasibhatla.

Directed by Suresh Triveni, the film is produced by T-Series and Abundantia Entertainment.

Jalsa is a drama peppered with the right amount of thrill. The film attempts to deliver a compelling story of secrets, truths, ironies laced with powerful, emotionally complex performances by Vidya and Shefali and the rest of the ensemble,” said Triveni in a statement.

This thriller marks Balan’s third collaboration with Abundantia and Amazon Prime after Shakuntala Devi and Sherni. Triveni has previously directed her in the 2017 slice-of-life film Tumhari Sulu, also starring Kaul.

This is the seventh project for Abundantia and the streamer after Chhorii, Durgamati, Ram Setu, and the popular Amazon Original series Breathe.

Jalsa releases on March 18.
