After Daniel Craig’s final outing as James Bond came with No Time To Die, he left some very big shoes to fill indeed. The uncertainty about who would essay the iconic role next has been something fans have questioned the makers about ever since Craig announced that he would bow out with the 2021 film, even suggesting their own picks for who would make the best Bond. One of the names thrown into the ring was that of Idris Elba, and producers have finally opened up about what they think about it.
In conversation with Deadline, Barbara Broccoli, who has been serving as producer on the Bond film series for over two decades, revealed that Elba’s name was something they had been considering. "It's been part of the conversation," she said, adding that they were taking their time in deciding the franchise’s future. She said that they would wait a while to truly appreciate Craig’s efforts in the latest instalment before they go in search of a new star.
Fans took to Twitter to make their case as to why Elba would make a great Bond, vehemently supporting the star.
Even a former Bond star weighed in on the matter. People magazine quoted Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond before Craig, as saying how he thought Elba would be "magnificent" as Bond. Fans have been rallying for Elba to be given the role for years. An old clip of the actor that surfaced last year, wherein he is seen praising Brosnan’s performance in Golden Eye (1995), just made their support for Elba grow stronger.
Several other stars have also been speculated to take up the mantle. Some of them include Tom Hardy and Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page.
