With only a couple of days to go for the scheduled release of Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan, the film has been in trouble with the censor certificate yet to be issued to the makers. Jana Nayagan, the Vijay headlined film, his final project before he retires from cinema, and what is expected to be the first big-ticket Tamil film of 2026, has been in legal trouble for last some days. The makers have not received the censor certificate, which delayed advance bookings. Now with only a couple of days away from release (January 9), the case came up for hearing at the Madras High Court on Wednesday. In short, the orders have been reserved for January 9, which postpones the release.
In long, the Jana Nayagan team had submitted their film for censor on December 19, but since then the film had gone back and forth with the revising committee. The makers had subsequently approached the court on Tuesday after which the hearing was postponed for the next day.
On Wednesday, Additional Solicitor General (AGS) had stated that one of the members of examining committee had complained that his objections were not recorded and had asked for time of four weeks to file counter affidavit. Meanwhile Justice PT Asha who heard the case CBFC chairman has the power to order a review even after examining committee has watched it. Further, AGS had argued that the film contained certain symbols of defence forces and that CBFC chairman can send the movie to screening committee for review. Adding that CBFC chairman has the power to refer to reviewing committee and that the film should be reviewed by a fresh committee comprising members who were not a part of the examining committee. ASG also had asked for four weeks time to file a counter affidavit.

Meanwhile, Justice Asha questioned CBFC how can they send the movie for review after changes had been made as per the recommendations to issue U/A. To this, ASG replied that the power of CBFC extends beyond examining committee's review.
Batting for Jana Nayagan team, advocate Parasaran said that all five members of the examining committee had their recommendations recorded and that it was only on Wednesday the film makers had come to know that one of the members had lodged the complaint, claiming that the makers were kept in dark about the complaint.
Despite the makers reiterating that Jana Nayagan was made on a massive budget and the release on January 9 is crucial, the court has reserved its orders, which is likely to be pronounced on January 9 morning.
