For the past few days, trouble has been brewing for the makers of Jana Nayagan who are yet to get censor certificate. While the formalities are yet to be completed, it has delayed the advance bookings in India, including its home state Tamil Nadu. The film starring Vijay in the lead role, marks his final film before he retires from cinema to pursue politics. But what has been delaying the film? Here is the timeline of events.
Jana Nayagan censor issue: What has happened so far?
Jana Nayagan is an upcoming Tamil film which marks Vijay’s retirement before he pursues full-time politics. The film is slated for release on January 9 in theatres. However, the advance bookings have not yet opened on a large scale, given censor formalities of the film have not been completed.
As per sources in the know, it all started on December 19 when the film was submitted for the Censor Board to watch the film. Following this, a few minor cuts were suggested by the officials with the team being informed verbally that Jana Nayagan will receive U/A certificate. Cut to December 24, when the makers had changed and submitted for approval, the delay began with the Christmas holiday, followed by the makers' efforts to get the certificate. On January 5, the film was reportedly referred to the Revising Committee because it hurt religious sentiments and for the portrayal of armed forces. The Regional Censor Office had asked the makers to contact the Mumbai office. With the delay in the censor formalities, the advance bookings have not started for the film in India on a large scale. Subsequently, the production filed a case at the Madras High Court, seeking to issue the censor certificate. The case, heard by Justice PT Asha, who asked to submit all records before Wednesday, was adjourned to January 7, with the hearing scheduled at 2.15pm.
