Seems like a lot of producers in Malayalam have gravitated towards feel-good movies these days, especially considering the reduced expenditure and the success these films have been able to generate. The latest in the list is director Aniesh Upaasana’s Janaki Jaane.
The movie, which has Navya Nair and Saiju Kurup in the lead, also stars Johny Antony, Sharafudheen, Anarkali Marikar, Sminu Sijo and James Eliya in pivotal roles.
What is Janaki Jaane about?
Aniesh, in an earlier interview, said the film is about Janaki who has a lot of fears. “Navya’s character in the movie, who has an inherent fear, isn’t something that’s easy to portray because if it becomes overdramatic, it can quickly turn to frantic. Navya has presented this role with utmost subtlety,” he said.
The film has Navya essaying the titular role of a printing press employee while Saiju Kurup plays Unni Mukundan, a contractor. “The crux of the movie is what happens after Unni approaches Janaki with a marriage proposal,” said Aniesh. George Kora and Kottayam Nazeer also play pivotal roles in the movie.
“It’s a family entertainer,” explained the filmmaker, who had previously helmed Matinee, Seconds and Popcorn. “There’s a kind of films that the family audience in Kerala wants to watch, but has not been explored much in recent times. We have made the movie in that format. It’s a subject that everybody is familiar with, but hasn’t been told before. So, the audience would watch this movie in the same mood as reading a short story. There’s no confusion; it’s a simple film.”
Saiju and Navya had previously teamed up for VK Prakash’s Oruthee. Incidentally, Janaki Jaane will be clashing with VK Prakash’s next directorial Live in theatres.
When and where to watch Janaki Jaane?
Janaki Jaane is set to hit theatres on May 12, along with Neymar and Live.
