Jawan: 6 must-watch Nayanthara films on OTT

Few would know this but Nayanthara is one of the highest-paid actors in India. The Tamil actress has appeared in over 80 films in a decorated career spanning two decades. The celebrated actress has made her Bollywood debut in the highly-anticipated Shah Rukh Khan film, Jawan, directed by Atlee. Today’s List Hai Toh Hit Hai podcast features six Nayanthara films that should be on your watchlist if you loved her performance in Jawan.

Naanum Rowdy Dhaan - Aha

The first film on this list is the 2015 Tamil romantic action comedy Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. The film is helmed by Nayanthara’s husband Vignesh Shivan, and stars Vijay Sethupathi in the lead alongside Nayanthara. The film tells the story of a hearing-impaired woman played by Nayanthara, who seeks vengeance against those who murdered her family. With the help of a local thug, played by Sethupathi, who has developed feelings for her, she embarks on her quest for revenge. The film was praised for its music, humour, and the excellent chemistry between the lead actors.

Aadhavan - ZEE5 and Disney+ Hotstar

Despite mixed reactions from critics, the 2009 Tamil film Aadhavan, which was helmed by K. S. Ravikumar, is one of the biggest box office hits in Nayanthara’s career. She stars alongside Tamil superstar Suriya in the lead, with Vadivelu, Murali, and B. Saroja Devi in supporting roles. The action comedy film revolves around a hitman who is tasked with killing a prominent judge. In order to complete his mission, he gains access to the household as a domestic help, but soon finds himself in a precarious position as the entire household, including his target’s niece, grows fond of him. The surreal plot lines, comedy, and action appealed to audiences and the film was a blockbuster hit in Tamil Nadu.

Thani Oruvan - Sun NXT

One of the most acclaimed films in Nayanthara’s career is the 2015 Tamil action-thriller Thani Oruvan. Directed by Mohan Raja, the film stars Jayam Ravi and Arvind Swamy alongside Nayanthara in lead roles, and Ganesh Venkataraman, Harish Uthaman, and Nassar among others in supporting roles. The plot revolves around a righteous police officer’s mission to expose the malpractices and corruption of a powerful and wealthy scientist. The film was praised for its gripping story and compelling characters when it was released in 2015.

Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal - Disney+ Hotstar

The 2022 romantic comedy Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal tells the story of a hilarious love triangle between Rambo, Kanmani, and Khatija. When the unfortunate and luckless Rambo finally finds love, he ends up falling for two women at the same time. Vijay Sethupathi slips into the role of Rambo in the film, while Nayanthara plays Kanmani and Samantha Ruth Prabhu essays the role of Khatija. Even though the film may have failed to impress critics, it became one of the biggest Tamil hits of 2022 thanks to its sharp comedy sequences and excellent performances by its lead stars.

Rappakal - Manorama Max

The 2005 Malayalam film Rappakal features Nayanthara in a prominent role alongside Malayalam legend Mammootty. The film tells the story of an elderly woman, the matriarch of an aristocratic family who relies on her domestic help to save her ancestral family home from being sold. The film, which was helmed by Kamal and based on a script by T. A. Razzaq, was a universal success.

Manassinakkare - Eros Now

One of Nayanthara's best films also happens to be her debut film. The relatively lesser-known Malayalam film Manassinakkare is a Sathyan Anthikad directorial which features performances by Jayaram and legendary actress Sheela in lead roles along with Nayanthara. Innocent, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, K. P. A. C. Lalitha, Siddique, Sukumari, Nedumudi Venu, and Mammukoya essay other prominent roles in this family drama. The plot revolves around the plight of a wealthy elderly woman who is neglected by her family but soon finds happiness and joy by being in the company of strangers belonging to a lower social demographic which alters her life significantly.
