On February 11, veteran actress and Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan spoke about the film industry during the General Discussion on the Union Budget 2025-26 in the Rajya Sabha. She requested Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to have “mercy” on the film industry and think about it to help it survive. Jaya Bachchan, who was last seen in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, accused the government of 'ignoring' the film industry.

Jaya Bachchan urges government to help film industry

According to PTI, Jaya Bachchan raised the issue and said the government wants to 'kill' the film industry. She also went on to say that they use the industry for 'serving their own purpose'. She said, "One industry has been totally ignored by you, and other governments were also doing the same thing. But today you have taken it to the next level. You have totally ignored the film and entertainment industry because you only use them for serving your own purpose. Today, leave aside GST, all the single screens (theatres) are shutting down. People are not going to movie halls because everything has become so costly. Perhaps you want to kill this industry altogether. This the only industry that connects the entire world to India."

'Please have some mercy'

Further, the veteran actress appealed for some 'mercy' for the audio-visual industry. While speaking on behalf of the film industry, she added, "Please spare them. Please have some mercy for them. You are trying to kill this industry. Please do not do this. Today you have started targeting cinema also." She requested Sitharaman to consider the issue “very very seriously” while pointing out that it is a ‘very difficult industry’. She said, “I request Finance Minister to consider and please bring something to help this industry survive."

Meanwhile, Jaya Bachchan's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani also starred Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Shabana Azmi, and Dharmendra. The film was released in 2023 and it was helmed by Karan Johar. It is available to watch on Prime Video.
