Jhund is based on the life of which real-life figure?
Jhund tells the real-life story of social worker and teacher Vijay Barse, the founder of the non-profit organisation Slum Soccer, a football club for underprivileged children who have an interest in the sport.
Barse, who was a sports teacher in Nagpur, was inspired to set up the club in 2001 when he witnessed a group of impoverished children play football using a makeshift ball. Bollywood heavyweight Amitabh Bachchan will emulate the role of the philanthropist in the film.
The film, which had begun filming in Nagpur way back in 2018, had witnessed several obstacles in its release. After wrapping up its shoot in August 2019, its release was scheduled for May 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After settling on a November 2020 release on Amazon Prime Video, the makers were caught in a legal tangle wherein they were accused of copyright infringement by a short film maker.
A teaser for the film shows a group of youngsters in an impressive march, armed with chains, sticks and even a bat. We also get to hear Big B’s awe inspiring baritone in the background asking that they be called not a jhund, but a team.
Jhund will mark the Hindi directorial debut of National Film Award winning filmmaker, Nagraj Manjule, best known for the acclaimed Marathi drama, Fandry. In addition to Amitabh Bachchan, the film also stars Akash Thosar and Rinku Rajguru. Jhund is produced by T-Series, Tandav Films Entertainment Pvt.Ltd and Aatpat Films.
