Jim Carrey has revealed his "fairly serious" plans to retire from acting soon. The actor will reprise his role as the antagonist Dr Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 this year, which will be his last on-screen outing.
In a conversation with Access Hollywood (via Variety) Carrey confirmed that retirement is definitely on the cards unless "the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break."
The actor added, "I really like my quiet life and I really like putting paint on canvas and I really love my spiritual life and I feel like — and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists — I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.
Some of Carrey's popular films are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show, The Mask, and Ace Ventura.
Variety notes that it's not uncommon for Carrey to take long breaks between his on-screen appearances. After Dumb and Dumber To in 2014, the actor was seen after six years in Sonic the Hedgehog. In this period, Carrey also starred in indie films like The Bad Batch and Dark Crimes and also played Joe Biden on Saturday Night Live for six episodes of the sketch comedy series.
The sequel to 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog will see the SEGA character Sonic team up with his new pal Tails played by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, as the two try to stop the powerful emerald from being used for destruction at the hands of Dr Robotnik.
Ben Schwartz returns as Sonic in the film, while James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Adam Pally as Wade, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel and Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone are the other actors in the sequel.
Distributed by Viacom18 Studios in India, the movie is set to hit theatres across the country on April 22, 2022.
