The year 2023 saw the success of a series of small-budget feel-good films in Tamil cinema, Joe being one of them. Since its release, the film has gained quite a reputation among the Tamil cinema lovers, which has invariably contributed to the anticipation in run up to its OTT release.

According to industry sources, Joe is set to make its streaming debut on January 12 on Disney+Hotstar. However, an official confirmation on the same is awaited.

It's noteworthy that Joe did not have a streaming partner at the time when it was released in theatres. With the major OTT players showing great caution in partnering with movies before their theatrical releases, the small-budget films are facing an added challenge.

Joe was released in cinemas on November 24. The film was highly endorsed by some of the leading members of the Tamil film industry, including Lokesh Kanagaraj and Nelson. It's only after positive reviews and good word of mouth, the streaming rights of Joe were acquired by this leading OTT platform.

One of the reasons behind the reluctance of the digital players to invest in this film might have been due to its not-so-memorable run at the box office. Before the film could capitalise on the positive reviews, its earning potential was seemingly undercut by Cyclone Michaung, which wreaked havoc across many parts of Tamil Nadu.

Joe marked the directorial debut of Hariharan Ram S. Judging from the trailer, Joe deal with a familiar tale of a complicated college romance and the ensuing emotional turmoil. The movie captures attention with its pleasing visuals and explores a heartwarming romance between a Tamil boy and a Malayali girl. Starring Rio Raj in the lead role, the film also features a talented ensemble cast including Malavika Manoj, Bhavya Trikha, Charle, and M. J. Shriram.
