Every week, when multiple Kannada films jostle for space at the already crowded box office, one question that movie teams often face is, ‘Why now? Why not push the release ahead to a better date? The answer, more often than not, is that no matter the date, if it is not a big star-led or production house-backed movie, a solo release is out of question and they end up having to fight for theatres
This week, according to ticket aggregator sites, there are at least 6 new Kannada films coming to theatres for Shivratri, along with several movies in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. Here’s a look at the Kannada original titles in theatres this week.
Jog 101
Vijay Raghavendra, who had as many as 5 releases last year - Kaasina Sara, Raaghu, O Manase, Kaddha Chithra, Marichi – is on to his second in 2024 with Jog 101. The actor, who was last seen in the critically-acclaimed Case of Kondana, returns with yet another thriller, Jog 101. This time around, he is a photographer, who visits the surroundings of the Jog Falls, a place where several people go missing every year and are presumed dead, to dig up some clues about these unsolved crimes. But why is he so invested in this? Directed by Vijay Kannadiga, the film also stars Tejaswini Shekhar, Tilak Shekar, Rajesh Nataranga and Kaddipudi Chandru, among others.
Karataka Damanaka
Yogaraj Bhat brings Shivarajkumar and Prabhudeva together in a film about two conmen, who are sent to a village by police officer with a certain motive, but end up doing something different altogether. Shivarajkumar is paired with Priya Anand and Prabhudeva with Nishvika Naidu in this comedy drama produced by Rockline Venkatesh.
Ranganayaka
Director Guruprasad and actor Jaggesh have a certain track record – their previous two collaborations, Matha and Edelu Manjunatha, have a cult following. Obviously, when the filmmaker and the actor get together again, it creates intrigue. Guruprasad has been hellbent about not revealing the story of Ranganayaka, and went to great lengths to ensure that the trailer of the film did not tell audiences anything. His promise is that he has made an entertainer that audiences will not be disappointed about.
Blink
Dia and KTM fame Dheekshith Shetty’s second release for the year is an experimental sci-fi film involving time travel. Directed by debutant Srinidhi Bengaluru, Blink is about Dheekshith’s character Apoorva, whose ability to not blink for long durations, has certain consequences. Gopalkrishna Deshpande and Chaithra J Achar are also on the cast of this film.
