The Diplomat: John Abraham-starrer to come with a disclaimer as instructed by CBFC? Here's what we know

Bollywood actor John Abraham is currently gearing up for the release of his film, The Diplomat. Directed by Shivam Nair, the film is set against the backdrop of real-life political events. In the movie, John will be seen as Indian diplomat J.P. Singh. Ahead of its theatrical release, The Diplomat was reportedly screened for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Although Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) cleared the movie, the board apparently asked the makers to add a disclaimer to the film.

The Diplomat to come with a disclaimer?

According to a Mid-Day, MEA screening focused on ensuring that The Diplomat's narrative didn't adversely affect India's diplomatic relations with Pakistan. 

"Considering the film is centred on international diplomacy, a visual and an audio disclaimer was added to emphasise that while the core matter may be inspired by a true incident, its portrayal of geopolitical tensions is dramatised and does not reflect the Indian government’s stance. The film is set in Pakistan," a source told the tabloid.

The source further mentioned it was essential to highlight an add disclaimer as India and Pakistan's relations are a sensitive matter. As instructed by CBFC, the makers had to add disclaimer stating that they support maintaining good relations with the neighbouring countries. For the uninitiated, The Diplomat is inspired by the 2017 episode of Uzma Ahmed’s repatriation.

Additionally, CBFC reportedly allowed the makers to use many real names in the film. "Sushma Swaraj [then Minister of External Affairs], JP Singh and Prashant Jadhav’s names have been used in portions after the makers submitted relevant documents. A scene of a young boy killing a woman has been reduced, and an expletive, muted," the source added.

The Diplomat on OTT

The Diplomat, starring John Abraham and Sadia Khateeb, will be released on OTT after its theatrical release. Directed by Shivam Nair, the film will drop on Netflix, as mentioned on the movie's official poster. The OTT release date of the movie hasn't been announced yet.
