After a long wait, Joker: Folie à Deux has finally made it to OTT in India. The Todd Philips film has been available for rent on Prime Video after its theatrical release, and now you can stream it on JioHotstar. Written by Scott Silver, Joker: Folie à Deux is a legal drama jukebox musical with Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Lady Gaga (Harley "Lee" Quinzel) featured in this sequel to Joker (2019). Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, and Leigh Gill are also part of the supporting cast.
While awaiting trial at Arkham State Hospital, Arthur falls in love with another prisoner in the film. Joker: Folie à Deux puts Arthur Fleck in Arkham Asylum while he awaits prosecution for crimes committed when he was Joker. Arthur discovers the love of his life and the music within him as he grapples with his dual identity.
At the 81st Venice International Film Festival 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux had its world premiere. On October 4, 2024, it was distributed in theatres across the US. The film bombed at the box office, earning just $207.5 million globally despite a budget of $190–200 million. Critics were also unimpressed.
Played by Phoenix, Arthur Fleck/Joker is a nihilistic criminal who suffers from mental illness. His past as an underprivileged party clown and aspiring stand-up comedian influences his clown image. Because his Joker character is an unwelcome symbol to those who offer him the love he has always desired, Arthur will not become the "Clown Prince of Crime," according to Phillips, even though the film will delve deeper into his psyche.
Harley "Lee" Quinzel, played by Lady Gaga, is an Arkham State Hospital prisoner who develops an unhealthy crush on Arthur and starts dating him. Phillips said that the new Lee is more grounded, manipulative, and immoral; Joker (2019) consciously eschews many of Lee's signature quirks and styles in favour of its own universe. Lee, in Gaga's view, exemplifies the study of contradictions because of her complex emotions towards Arthur—which range from admiration to disgust—her honesty and dishonesty, her dangerousness, and her apparent lack of aggression. Lee is also a "very nonlinear person," according to Gaga, and, like all people engaged in storytelling, she believes that the more real Lee is, the more she could be a contradiction.
