Nilima Bandyopadhyay, the yesteryear’s renowned singer, was actor Bhanu Bandyopadhyay’s wife. She went through lots of struggles along with her husband and was a true comrade to him till the last days. Bhanu Bandyopadhyay’s 103rd birthday was on August 26. On that day, director Krishnendu Chatterjee and his team released the poster of his film Jomaloye Jibonto Bhanu. It has already been reported that Saswata Chatterjee will play Bhanu Bandyopadhyay. The on-screen Nilima Bandyopadhyay will be played by Debleena Dutt.
Debleena shared her look as Nilima Bandyopadhyay on her social media. She was much praised after the news was released. Bhanu’s son Goutam Bandyopadhyay gave a thumbs-up to the actress on social media. Celebrities like the director Anik Dutta and the actress-cum-anchor Sudipa Chatterjee also praised her look.
In an interview with Aajkal Dot Net, Debleena said, “I did films previously, jointly produced by India and Bangladesh. So, I know that dialect. However, I learned in detail from her daughter Basabi Bandyopadhyay about the accent of how she used to speak the Bangladeshi language.”
Debleena came to know many untold stories about the star couple. Like today's couples, Bhanu and Nilima were less husband and wife and more friends. Debleena said, “Goutamda told me that his mother was a popular singer at that time and Bhanu Bandyopadhyay was not much established. Hence, Nilima’s father had objections to his son-in-law’s profession. But Bhanu stuck to his decision to do nothing but act. Hence he went to the studio para and did the shooting. No one else except Nilima knew that. She shielded Bhanu from her father. Everyone thought that Bhanu went to work.” Also, the couple worked equally hard to maintain the family and their monetary contributions to the family were the same. That was a rare event in those days.
Was Debleena afraid when Krishnendu asked her to do the role? The actress replied, “I am never afraid. But I was anxious before getting the role. Both of Bhanu Bandyopadhyay's children were on the casting team. They rejected many people and selected me. After that, I was anxious about whether the family would be satisfied with my looks and acting. Now they are praising me in public and I am relieved.” She said that Saswata Chattopadhyay also encouraged her. “Saswata and I paired up in Ek Akasher Niche and the audience loved our chemistry. I hope that they will love us here also.”
