Filmmaker Anik Dutta, who has always been a huge fan of Satyajit Ray, brings another investigative thriller, Joto Kando Kolkatatei, which pays homage to the legend. Although this latest movie uses the beloved framework of Satyajit Ray’s detective universe, Anik Dutta brings a new storyline set in Kolkata. After its theatrical release in September 2025, Joto Kando Kolkatatei is set to make its digital debut this month.

This latest Bengali movie will release on ZEE5 (also accessible via OTTplay Premium) on January 9, 2026. While Abir Chatterjee portrayed the lead role, Bangladeshi actress Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed made her India debut with Joto Kando Kolkatatei. The investigative thriller grossed Rs 2.12 crore at the worldwide box office, according to tracker Sacnilk.

What's the plot of Joto Kando Kolkatatei?

This Anik Dutta-directed film pays homage to Satyajit Ray’s Feluda and Topshe detective stories. The film follows a young woman named Saba, who teams up with detective Toposmitro to solve a multi-generational puzzle case in Kolkata. Driven by an old photograph, Saba travels from Dhaka to Kolkata to uncover secrets about her ancestral past.

Saba and Toposmitro’s thrilling investigation leads them through Kolkata's historic streets, solving a series of riddles that span decades, testing Toposmitro's skills. The duo uses tech like GPS alongside classic detective tropes in the film, which blends nostalgia with contemporary storytelling.  Joto Kando Kolkatatei updates Feluda’s classic formula of solving gripping cases with modern technology.

Apart from Abir Chatterjee and Quazi Nawshaba Ahmed in the lead roles, Joto Kando Kolkatatei also features Mithu Chakraborty, Roja Paromita Dey, Rik Chattopadhyay, Dulal Lahiri and Aparajita Ghosh in pivotal and supporting roles.

Back in 2023, Anik Dutta had a chat with t2ONLINE and shared his nostalgic experience of filming Joto Kando Kolkatatei. He revealed that the movie was shot in Kolkata’s various locations, and one of them is Beleghata’s local old house called Barrister Bari. He further shared that the locations also include St. John's Church in the Dalhousie area. They even recreated the iconic restaurants from the 1960s. Anik Dutta excitedly shared that he also included The Russell Exchange to add to the yesteryear charm.
