Aamir Khan is finally set to make his comeback into movies with Sitaare Zameen Par. This comes after his big failure in Laal Singh Chaddha. The actor believed that the Forrest Gump adaptation would be one of the best works of his career, but the film tanked at the Box Office. However, this year has changed a lot for the actor. He found his new ladylove in Gauri Spratt and introduced her to media on his birthday, and is also set to make a comeback into films by Christmas. Aamir's director-cousin Mansoor Khan got into a conversation with The Indian Express' Screen, where he discussed the debacle that he believes could have been avoided if Aamir's son Junaid would've been cast instead. Mansoor further hints at his own directorial comeback with Aamir.
Although praising Aamir Khan for the dedication towards his characters, whether the six-pack abs in Ghajini or looking like a college student in 3 Idiots to gaining weight for Dangal, Mansoor cautions his cousin to not put the love for a character over the script.
The same was in reference with Laal Singh Chaddha, which Mansoor believes Aamir got all wrong. "Arre I saw the first trial and I told Aamir, “What are you doing!,” he recalled telling his cousin at the screening of Laal Singh Chaddha. He believes that the screenplay was well-adapted from Forrest Gump, but owing to the mannerisms, every scene felt different and thus, Aamir had a failure party for the movie.
Suggesting that Junaid Khan was a better fit for the role than Aamir, the director-cousin shared, "Aamir had asked me why don’t I come and see Junaid’s screen test. I thought Junaid did a brilliant job." He suggested that Junaid be a part of the movie, but as expected, the producers were taken aback. This is particularly because then the movie would lose out on the biggest two faces - both Aamir as well as Kareena. "What is this fear of market mein opening nahi lagegi? Kya bakwas hai," he said, shunning the mindset of casting only A-list actors to bring in the business.
"I’m ashamed to say I haven’t seen 99.99% of films ever made. But I have a flair for writing stories, and I also think I’m pretty good at it," Mansoor, who has helmed Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, confessed.
Calling it supereasy and a 'relief' to quit films, Mansoor Khan adds that out of his trilogy of books (third is yet to come out), Aamir Khan and he are discussing the idea of converting his second book - ONE: The Story of the Ultimate Myth - into a film. Aamir has also expressed his desire to act in the movie. Mansoor hinted that he would even make a directorial comeback only for the one movie and go back to writing novels rather than working in movies. However, they are still working things out since Mansoor is of the belief that every story has the best medium, and the story from his book should be interesting enough to be converted into a film.
Recalling the climax scene of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Mansoor Khan shared how he wrote it while sitting on the rocks with the entire team present. He believed that it was being rushed and thus, the climax needed to be stretched. So, he did exactly that. "You should have that liberty. You can’t have your first AD to do the shot breakdown and that’s it. The plasticity comes from the films being too structured. That simplicity and innocence have been lost somewhere, even in the good films," he said.
Before Sitaare Zameen Par release, be sure to watch Aamir Khan's last ever film, a cameo in Kajol's Salaam Venky.
