Dia Mirza starrer Kaafir series was re-released as a film on ZEE5 on April 4, 2025. It is inspired by the true story of Shehnaz Parveen and centers on Kainaaz (Dia Mirza), a Kashmiri woman who accidentally crosses the Line of Control and is imprisoned in India, falsely accused of being a militant. In a new interview, Dia recalled shooting the horrifying rape scene in Kaafir and added that she threw up after shooting the scene.
During an interview with CNN-news18, Dia Mirza shared the experience of shooting the rape scene in Kaafir and said that it was physically and mentally demanding.
"I was shaking physically after we got done with filming that scene. I remember throwing up. I vomited after we finished rolling that entire sequence. That’s how emotionally and physically demanding those situations were. When you take your entire body into the truth of that moment, you feel it. You feel it in its full extent," the actress said.

In an earlier interview with Mid Day, Mirza shared her thoughts over Kaafir turning a film. The actress revealed that Kaafir was put on hold for a long period following its initial development as a film. But now, ZEE5 expressed interest in adapting the show into a series and writer Bhavani Iyer revised it.
Kaafir, the heart-wrenching thriller is inspired by the true story of Shehnaz Parveen. This is the story of Kainaaz Akhtar (Dia Mirza), a Pakistani woman who mistakenly crossed the Line of Control and was imprisoned in India for seven years. An Indian journalist, Vedant (Mohit Raina), becomes determined to help her and her daughter Seher, who was born in prison, fight for their freedom. The story highlights the dilemma of those wrongly imprisoned and the importance of seeking justice for the innocent.
