Kaantha, the 2025 Tamil film starring actor Dulquer Salmaan in the lead role, hit the screens this week and debuted at the box office with Rs 4 crore, as per reports. The film, a period drama, which is set in the 1950s, had opened to decent reviews with many praising Dulquer’s performance.

Kaantha is a recently released Tamil period film. The film revolves around the ego clash between a star actor and the director who introduced him. Kaantha released in theatres on November 14 following paid premieres a day before.
As per Sacnilk report, Kaantha has made Rs 4.01 crore so far, in both Tamil and Telugu. It is to be noted that Kaantha has made only half of what Dulquer’s previous film, Lucky Baskhar had debuted with, Rs 8.45 crore. In fact, the film also failed to beat the opening numbers of Dulquer’s last Malayalam film, the 2023 action-drama King of Kotha, which had made Rs 6.85. It is also to be noted that Kaantha does not have any major competitors down south to compete at the box office, and has to rely on word of mouth and organic turnout over the weekend for the film to run successfully.

Kaantha is a period drama, written and directed by filmmaker Selvamani Selvaraj. The film also stars Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani, Rana Daggubati, Ravindra Vijay, Vayapuri, Gayathrie, Nizhalgal Ravi and others. The film, as opposed to the rumours, is not a biopic of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, Tamil cinema’s first superstar. It is a fictional tale on the clash between an actor and filmmaker on the sets of their movie. Both Rana and Dulquer have jointly produced the film. The post-theatrical streaming rights of the film have been bagged by Netflix.
