Kaantha producer Dulquer Salmaan says ‘We were all clouded by the love for the film’; Rana Daggubati adds ‘It took us a while to figure out…’

Actors Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati had come together this year to produce the Tamil period drama Kaantha. The film, which is set in the 1950s, explores the clash of egos between an actor and a director on the film sets. At a recent roundtable, both the actors spoke about travelling with the film for over six years and staying in love with the script.

Rana Daggubati on producing Kaantha:

At a roundtable organised by The Hollywood Reporter India, actor and producer Rana Daggubati, who was one of the stars behind this year’s Tamil film Kaantha, said, "I think the story itself, the material that talks to us in a manner nothing else do, and the earnest of the filmmaker. There were some extreme indie energy and a story important to tell. Why it took us so long because it was written like a novel and play. It took us a while to figure out how to get the screenplay, how we mount and market the film. Unless we push the boundaries and get the mainstream actors to do cinema that is slightly alternative, the variety won't come. We are extremely proud of it.”

"We stayed too much in love," Rana Daggubati said when asked if they were affirmative of the script for the six years the script travelled with them. Adding to this, Dulquer quipped, "Are we losing the clarity? We were all clouded by the love for the film, like is it too indulgent. It is too rare to get a story like this." Dulquer, who also played the lead role in Kaantha, said that after a point, both Rana and he 'stopped making sense to the CEOs' with their budget. "I think it is a film that we will be proud of."

Kaantha OTT release:

Kaantha’s post-theatrical streaming rights have been bagged by Netflix, with a release date yet to be announced. The film is written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj. Also starring Bhagyashri Borse, Samuthirakani and others, Kaantha is a period flick which combines human drama and murder mystery.
