By now, it is very well established that Dulquer Salmaan, an actor par excellence, has managed to conquer the genre of period dramas like no other. Mahanati showed him as the yesteryear actor Gemini Ganesan, and he stole the show. Then he came as Lieutenant Ram in Sita Ramam, and yet again walked away with praises. In the latest came Lucky Baskhar, a period financial thriller drama, that managed to do good talking. Now comes Kaantha, a film that is also close to the glitzy world of cameras and filmmaking, which was in the making for years.
Dulquer Salmaan’s upcoming film Kaantha, has already been witnessed by a section of people who cannot stop raving about his performance. With the paid premieres held on Thursday, followed by release the next day, Kaantha is a period flick, which is directed by Selvamani Selvaraj.

The film follows the life of a celebrated actor, who, from being a no one, became a celebrated star, all thanks to a film director who sculpted an actor out of him. But who has the ego left, when the duo gets competitive over their egoistic pride, as they put the film they are working on, on the back burner, ensuing a tale of deceit, power, and pride.
It is the second time for Dulquer to play an actor, while fourth time in recent times, he will be going back to a bygone era. Every time so far when Dulquer has turned on the time machine, the audience have seen nothing but a spectacle. Be it his grey-shaded Gemini Ganesan in Mahanati, the charming lover of Sita Ramam, or even the street-smart Baskhar of Lucky Baskhar, Dulquer has become the poster boy of period dramas. Not to forget his Malayalam stints, Kurup, and Kammatipaadam, which had won praises for Dulquer’s performances in a period setting. What strikes best in these films is that Dulquer stood out as a character, representing the man from a particular era. Be it with the appearance and costumes, the body language, or even taking influence from some real-life characters, the actor has seen the appreciation come his way.

In Kaantha, Dulquer will once again be playing a man from a certain era, precisely from the 1950s Madras Presidency, TK Mahadevan. A celebrated actor and protégé of a director, with whom he now does not get along with, Kaantha takes back to the film sets where studios existed and fame was everything. The egoistic battle between the director (played by Samuthirakani) and the actor, the latter who is trying to shift the focus from a script that is women-centric, to one revolving around a hero.
Kaantha, with its technical prowessa and exciting cast, including Samuthirakani, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati, is expected to be one more of Dulquer’s outings that will further cement his image as period flick star. With a few more hours to go for the paid premieres, and FDFS shows to start from Friday morning, we will get to know the result of Kaantha, and if indeed it will be a successful follow-up for Dulquer.
