Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran returned a part of his remuneration that he had received for acting in Shaji Kailas’ Kaapa, which hit theatres on December 22. The movie, which was jointly produced by Saregama and Theatre of Dreams, was made with an eye to also raise funds for the Writers Union of Film Employees Federation of Kerala.

The producers had handed over Rs 1.5 crore to the FEFKA Writers Union ahead of the movie’s release at a function in Kochi. During the event, FEFKA official and director B Unnikrishnan had also announced that Prithviraj, who plays the lead in the gangster-drama, had returned a chunk of his salary as part of efforts.

It’s now reported that the star had returned Rs 25 lakh in solidarity with the aim of making the movie. Asif Ali, who was also part of the function, had said that he too would have like to do the same but couldn’t at this point of time.

The movie, which is helmed by Shaji Kailas, is based on GR Indugopan’s literary work Shankhumukhi and is extensively set in Thiruvananthapuram. Prithviraj essays the role of a goon-turned-gangster named Kotta Madhu while Aparna Balamurali essays his wife. Asif Ali plays an IT employee named Anand, through whom most of the movie is narrated. Anna Ben portrays Binu Trivikraman, who is Anand’s wife and also the sister of a man murdered by Madhu’s gang in the past. How their lives intertwine during the gang wars in Thiruvananthapuram form the plot of the film, which marked Prithviraj’s second collaboration with director Shaji Kailas after their superhit Kaduva.

Kaapa’s OTT rights were sold before the film’s theatrical release. The movie’s streaming rights were bought by Netflix, which had picked up Prithviraj’s previous film Jana Gana Mana. Kaapa is expected to drop on the platform in January 2023.
