Malayalam superstar Mammootty has been literally pushing the envelope as far as his choices of films go for quite a while, but it’s been a lot more pronounced in recent times. The sheer variety of roles, most of which are not larger-than-life and only focus on the great artistry he brings to the table, has been astounding, whether it is Peranbu Puzhu, Rorschach, Bheeshma Parvam, Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam, Kannur Squad, etc., among many others. Film aficionados were, therefore, surprised, when an image of what appears to be the plot synopsis of the Jeo Baby directorial surfaced on social media, supposedly from the Goa International Film Festival, where the film is being screened.

According to this plot, Mammootty’s character in the film is a closeted homosexual, who conforms to societal diktats and marries Jyothika, and has been raising a family with her for two decades. This perfect picture of his family comes crashing down when she seeks divorce, citing his sexuality and cruelty. How people react to this revelation apparently forms the crux of the film. Netizens, though, are divided about this plot, the authenticity of which is yet to be verified. While several praised Mammootty and his career trajectory in recent times, the mere mention of homosexuality had the moral police also sounding war cries.

Reacting to the plot, an X user wrote, “He's always been brave..even in the 80's. This particularly has been phenomenal. One thing is for sure, in terms of diveristy of characters played (particularly among superstars) theres no one close to him in India.” Another chimed in hoping that the film would open a meaningful conversation about the subject. A third opined that the film will shake the Malayalam industry, considering that the only time homosexuality was touched upon earlier was in director Roshan Andrrews’ Mumbai Police.

Kaathal The Core, is set to release in theatres on November 23. The film brings Jyothika back to Malayalam cinema after a prolonged hiatus. The actress’ husband had also tweeted in support o fthe film after the trailer dropped, writing, “Always stunned to see how Malayalam cinema pulls off complex stories with remarkable ease. Look forward to #KaathalTheCore releasing on Nov 23rd. Best wishes to @mammukka #Jyotika #JeoBaby & Team.”
