Kabzaa was supposed to be the next big thing from the Kannada film industry – the film that would continue the successful streak that KGF-2, 777 Charlie and Kantara had with audiences across the country. The R Chandru directorial, which had Upendra in the lead, with Sudeep and Shivarajkumar in pivotal cameos, turned out to be one of the biggest disasters, with the film being panned for copying the KGF template and not doing a good job with it.
The film was about an air force officer Arkeshwara (Upendra) turning to a life of crime in the underworld, after taking revenge on those who murdered his brother. Sudeep was the police officer, Bhargav Bakshi, entrusted with capturing Arkeshwara, while Shivarajkumar comes in the dying moments of the film as an unnamed rival, set to takeover Arkeshwara’s position in the underworld. Shriya Saran was also on the cast as Arkeshwara’s love interest.

According to Chandru, his plan was to take the story forward with Shivarajkumar and Sudeep taking the lead in the sequel. The filmmaker reasoned that part 1 was about Arkeshwara’s growth to become the most dreaded gangster, and that part 2 would be about Shivarajkumar taking on that mantle. However, after the first film came out, fans of both the superstars were less than happy about the roles Chandru had for them, with Sudeep’s ‘ageless’ character limited to being the narrator, while Shivarajkumar gets but a fleeting glimpse in the climax. In the aftermath of the film’s release, fans took to social media urging both not to return for a sequel.
Over the last weekend, Kabzaa had its Kannada television premiere, following which Chandru thanked audiences who watched the film. In his social media note, the filmmaker also promised that he will bring the sequel to them at the earliest. The response to this was, yet again, a resounding no, with netizens telling the filmmaker that they are not interested in another instalment.
