R. Chandru's Kabzaa opened in theatres on March 17 with a lot of promise but the film could not live up to it. The film was panned by almost every critic and the audiences, too, weren't impressed by the fact that after all, the film ended up being a blatant look-alike of the KGF movies. On top of that, the incoherent narrative and the lack of any character arc, too, caused a lot of disappointment among the fans.
The same feedback has been translated into box office collections and as per the latest trade reports, Kabzaa has only managed to collect Rs. 34 crores (net) in India. With the second weekend of its theatrical run yielding less than Rs. 5 crores, it would seem that the pan-Indian film will fold earlier than anticipated.
This is what AJ Shetty, the cinematographer of Kabzaa, had to say about the film's making:
Kabzaa to debut on Amazon Prime Video
R. Chandru, the director & producer of Kabzaa, had spoken on multiple occasions that Amazon Prime Video was mighty impressed with what the film had to offer. It came to light in October of 2022 that the film's digital streaming rights were acquired by the streaming giant for a solid price, although the exact figure of this deal remains under wraps.
And now, following an underwhelming theatrical run, Kabzaa is all set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video. The action drama starring Upendra, Kiccha Sudeep and Shriya Saran will debut on the platform on April 14, 2023.
Netizens share unfiltered views
Over the past few days, the claims of Kabzaa breaking into the Rs. 100 crore club on the second day of its release have evoked several hilarious reactions on social media. Netizens, who did not dare believe the numbers that R. Chandru and Co. were throwing at them, criticized the filmmaker quite harshly, albeit with a sense of humour and fun.
"Won't wait for 3000cr box office?" said one user in response to the news of Kabzaa dropping on Prime Video on April 14. "Thanks for the warning ⚠️" said another, with a fellow Twitter member sarcastically questioning R. Chandru, "when is the celebration meet for beating the box office numbers of RRR, KGF2 & Pathan?"!
Indeed, the response to Kabzaa's OTT debut has not been a positive one so far and considering that the film landed on a digital platform within a month of its release says a lot about its box-office performance. More updates to follow.
