Kannada filmmaker R Chandru has had three events for his upcoming film Kabzaa so far. The title track launch in Hyderabad, followed by a classical dance number in Chennai and a special song in his hometown Sidlaghatta, which was more about building brand Chandru than the film, with massive cut outs of the filmmaker at the venue and along the way, starting from Devanahalli. The next, which was to be the biggest of the lot, was the trailer launch, which was to be held in Mumbai, with presenter and distributor Anand Pandit handling the affairs. There are rumours that he’s planned pre-release events in Hyderabad and Chennai, but nothing in Bengaluru.

Chandru’s itinerary for the film’s promotions had evoked questions as to why he wasn’t doing anything back home and targeting Kannada movie audiences, because irrespective of its pan-India status, Kabzaa is, essentially, a Kannada film. And the sure-shot way to ensure its success is to get the home crowd advantage in its favour, something that Chandru has failed to tap into so far. Netizens have been pointing this out on social media, along with the fact that there is barely any buzz surrounding the film, even though it is just over a fortnight away from its date with audiences.

Earlier today, OTTplay heard from a source that the Mumbai trailer launch was advanced by a day to accommodate Kiccha Sudeep, who has a cameo in the film. The Kannada superstar has been playing the Celebrity Cricket tournament and could not have made it to a March 3 event, so it had been fixed for March 2 instead. But now we hear that the trailer will not be launched in Mumbai after all. As of now, the Mumbai event stands cancelled, and although no reason has been furnished by the team, there has been a lot of chatter on social media about R Chandru’s lack of initiative in picking up the pace on the promotions of the film, with some users even asking co-producer Alankar Pandian to get involved and set course correction in motion.
