After a week of uncertainty over a litigation and consequent censor protocol, the makers of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Vivek Oberoi’s ‘mass’ action entertainer Kaduva have confirmed its release date.
The movie, which was initially set to hit theatres worldwide on June 30, had deferred its release date to July 7. However, there was no official confirmation regarding this, till July 5 when the CBFC had cleared the film with a U/A certification and bookings opened.
Prithviraj took to his social media page to share the news on Tuesday. He apologised for keeping the audience waiting and being late to open the bookings, citing the reason as legal procedures had to take its course. The film ran into trouble after Jose Kuruvinakunnel had filed a case against the makers alleging that Kaduva’s lead character Kaduvakunnel Kuruvachan is based on his true story and they had not acquired rights for the film. He had filed a defamation case, which the courts had twice ruled in the favour of the film’s scriptwriter Jinu V Abraham.
Before the movie went on floors, Jinu had also alleged the makers of Suresh Gopi’s Ottakomban of plagiarism. The court had also ruled this in favour of Jinu, after which the team had started shooting.
Kaduva, which also has Vivek Oberoi, Samyuktha Menon and Arjun Ashokan in pivotal roles, is helmed by Shaji Kailas, who is returning to Malayalam after a gap of almost eight years with the movie. The film revolves around an ego tussle between Kuruvachan, who is a wealthy rubber planter, and Joseph Chandy, a top police officer.
The movie is set in the 90s and has Prithviraj doing an all-out action movie after a gap of almost a decade. Kaduva is produced by Prithviraj Productions and Magic Frames, and will be released in five languages – Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi – on July 7.
