Balraj Sahani starrer Do Bigha Zamin will always be a film that will serve as a reminder of the atrocities many in the country have faced at the hands of zamindars who took advantage of illiteracy. The film, which looks at a man trying to save his land from getting auctioned, is one of the most heartbreaking movies ever as it doesn't try to give its audience hope that everything will be fine one day.
Anari (1959)

Anari is about a man who is a charmer but also a very wide individual. When he does a good deed for a rich man, he is employed by the same rich man who now ends his days of being jobless. As he meets a woman who probably works for the rich man too, he falls in love with her, only to realize she is the niece of the said rich man. Their love story hits a roadblock when a tragedy hits, and you must watch the film for what happens.
Shree 420 (1955)

One of the most tender Raj Kapoor movies with an iconic music album, Shree 420 is about a man who comes to the big city with aspirations in his eyes but is brought to the ground when the city welcomes him a bit too harshly. Right when he is penniless and broken, he meets a woman who decides to help and gives him shelter. Shree 420 blooms beyond this point and is a very interesting story.
Abhiman (1973)

Abhiman is indeed one of the most loved films. It has Big B with real-life wife Jaya Bachchan in a very complex trajectory. A popular singer tells his wife to become a singer and motivates her. She signs up for it, and her career blooms in no time. But little do they know destiny is about to snatch everything from the husband, and the fact that the wife will only rise higher will become a conflict between the two.
Pakeezah (1972)

We kept the best for the last. Kamal Amrohi's cult classic Pakeezah which stars the legendary Meena Kumari will always be relevant no matter what. Are Tawaifs allowed to fall in love and have a life outside the golden cages in which they are kept? Pakeezah explores the same question as it looks at a love story that is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. A movie that should be seen by everyone for the grandeur and the poetry.
