Kaiva, directed by Jayathirtha Jayanna and starring Dhanveerah and Megha Shetty in the lead, is a period love story set in the 80s, based on true events. The film follows the inter-faith relationship of a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl and the trials and tribulations they face in trying to fulfil their dream of a lifetime together. The story was inspired by a real couple, the filmmaker had said. Released in theatres in December 2023, the action drama was widely panned and did not work at the box office; it eventually dropped on Amazon Prime Video in February 2024.

Kaiva is now headed to Sun NXT

The film is no longer on the platform, and will, as of February 28, be available on Sun NXT for streaming. The platform’s announcement post read, “A storm is about to hit”. Although Kaiva was marketed as an intense love story, the film was censored A for its extensive violence. The director had justified this saying that the friction between two religious factions could not be portrayed in a soft manner.

The film’s 80s setting allowed Jayathirtha to transport audiences to a vibrant time in Bengaluru’s history, including its notorious underworld. The violence apart, the depiction of the famed Karaga festival was a major highlight of Kaiva.

In a promotional interview with OTTplay, Jayathirtha had said that the intensity with which the real-life couple fought for their love, and that 4 decades hence, they are still together and going strong, is what drew him to the story. “The commitment to be together regardless of all the strife and struggles caught my attention,” he had said.

Kaiva was Dhanveerah and Megha’s last theatrical release. While Dhanveerah will next be seen in Vamana, which has been announced as an April 10, 2025 outing, Megha has a few films, including Vinay Rajkumar’s Gramayana, which are still in various stages of production.
