It would not be an exaggeration to call Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge one of the defining Bollywood films of the 1990s. The film saw Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol share the screen, in one of the most memorable pairings of their careers. The film still remains one of the most iconic romantic comedies in Bollywood today, even being re-released in theatres recently on the occasion of Valentine’s Day this year. The film’s immense popularity had sparked rumours of a remake of the same, but lead star Kajol seems to be strictly against such an idea.

In conversation with News18 recently, Kajol expressed her displeasure at the idea of a remake of DDLJ, also adding that she felt the same way about Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham as well. I feel that magic can only be created once. If you recreate it, it just fizzles out and it won’t have the same feel”.

The actress spoke of how a remake would definitely spark comparisons with the original, and audiences would be disappointed because of that. She felt that even if the remake was well done and portrayed, it would still lead to disappointment among audiences.

She went on to say that the ‘magic’ of such films had a different feel to them, which was hard to replicate. Audiences would be able to get that feeling when they watch the film for the first time, and no remake could come close to the same, and the film was widely discussed on the filmmaker’s recent Netflix series, The Romantics.

Earlier, there had been reports that DDLJ would be remade with Vijay Deverakonda playing the lead role, with Aditya Chopra producing. But Yash Raj Films had denied the same. DDLJ marked Aditya’s directorial debut.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
