Kalamkaval X reviews: ‘Terrific Mammootty’, hail netizens but Jithin K Jose’s ‘slow’ film garners mixed responses

Kalamkaval has finally been released in theatres, with fans flocking to watch Mammootty in his villainous avatar in the latest Malayalam film, helmed by Jithin K Jose. But the much-anticipated release has not transitioned into unanimously positive responses. While a majority of the netizens are in awe of Mammootty's terrific performance as the villain, some found the slow narration as problematic. Malayalam megastar Mammootty’s big return to the silver screen with Kalamkaval is not getting the overwhelmingly positive reaction, as fans had hoped for. However, the veteran star seems to be the biggest strength of the movie, as fans praise his performance as ‘terrific’. While some said he impressed with ‘a never before seen character’, yet another person said ‘Salute the performance’. Mammootty playing the villain also got brownie points from netizens, who feel this was peak villainism.

Actor Vinayakan plays the other lead role in the film, that of a cop, out to hunt down the serial killer Stanley Das, who has preyed upon several women. While some netizens were impressed with Vinaykan’s performance, certain viewers termed him as a ‘miscast’.

Debutant director Jithin K Jose has also penned the script. But the slow narration has not gone down well with many netizens complaining of lag. But not just Mammootty, Mujeeb Majeed’s moody music was another strong point of the movie.

 Gibin Gopinath, Rajisha Vijayan, Gayatri Arun and Shruti Ramachandran are other actors part of the Kalamkaval cast.

Kalamkaval is expected to have a solid opening at the box office, given that it grossed over Rs 2 crore in advance sales itself, as per reports. But it remains to be seen how the film will preform after the opening weekend. After is theatrical run, Kalamkaval is reported to land on SonyLiv (will also be available on OTTplay Premium)
