Popular and veteran Malayalam writer and director MT Vasudevan Nair, known for his prolific work in Malayalam literature, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, at the age of 91. The writer was undergoing treatment for breathing issues. With his demise leaving a big void in Malayalam cinema and literature atmosphere, condolences poured in. Actor and politician Kamal Haasan paid his respects as he hailed the late writer's contribution which has immensely shaped today's art.
MT Vasudevan Nair, who has created a prominent place as a Malayalam writer and filmmaker, has played a huge influence in Kamal Haasan’s life. Speaking about the late writer, the actor said, “Any person who considers himself as a writer, a person recognises himself as a writer, and a person who is honoured as writer, would be impacted by MT Vasudevan Nair’s words.”
Kamal Haasan also spoke about his 1974 film Kanyakumari which marked his debut lead role and was written by MT Vasudevan Nair. “At the age of 19, when I did Kanyakumari, I was not able to fully grasp his stature. But after sometime, I had the opportunity to see his Nirmalyam, which converted a small spark towards cinema within me into a fire. Satyajit Ray, Shyam Benegal, MTV sir, Girish Karnad might come from different places, but all of them are my brothers. Vasudevan sir has excelled as a novelist, editor and screenplay writer. He has also found a prominent place in the Malayalam cinema and his works will stay with us for many more years to come. I do not have the heart to separate from you.”
MT Vasudevan Nair's stories were made into an anthology series titled Manorathangal, which is available for streaming on ZEE5 and the OTTplay Premium app. Based on nine stories penned by MT Vasudevan Nair, the anthology featured Mohanlal, Mammootty, Fahadh Faasil, Biju Menon, Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Indrajith Sukumaran, Asif Ali, Mamukkoya, Vineeth, Indrans, Aparna Balamurali, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and others. It is presented by Kamal Haasan, with directors Priyadarshan, Santhosh Sivan, Ranjith, Jayaraj, Shyamaprasad, Mahesh Narayanan, Ratheesh Ambat and Aswathy Nair helming the segments.
