Kamal Haasan was left "amazed" after watching the much-awaited Ponniyin Selvan 2 in a special screening along with composer Devi Sri Prasad. The screening was attended by director Mani Ratnam himself. Haasan had previously been Ratnam's choice to lead the movie adaptation of Kalki's epic novel Ponniyin Selvan in the 90s, but due to technical and budgetary constraints, the project was put on hold. However, after years of perseverance and hard work, Ratnam finally achieved his dream.

Kamal praised the movie, saying, "Mani Ratnam has done a great job. There will be many different opinions when it comes to any work of art. Even though this movie seems to have evoked different opinions, I gather from the news reports that people have been appreciating this film in a big way." He also commended Ratnam's bravery in celebrating Tamil culture and cinema through the film.
