Simranjit Singh Mann, a former Member of Parliament from Punjab, and the leader of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), has sparked outrage with his offensive comments about actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut. The controversy follows Kangana Ranaut's recent statement, claiming that rapes occurred during the farmers’ protests. On August 29, the former MP responded to the actress with disgraceful remarks, fuelling further debate and backlash. Even the 38-year-old actress took to her social media platform, and slammed the former MP for ‘trivialising rape’.
In the video, Simranjit Singh Mann is seen asked by the interviewer about Kangana Ranaut’s statement that rapes happened during the farmers’ protests. Mann replied that he has no idea how rape happens. “You can ask her (Kangana Ranaut) how rape happens so that people can be explained how rape happens. She has a lot of experience of rape,” Mann said, as per a report on India Today.
Reacting to the politician’s statements, the Emergency-director took to her Instagram story, and shared Simranjit Singh Mann’s interview video, and wrote, “It seems this country will never stop trivialising rape. Today, this senior politician compared getting raped to riding a bicycle. No wonder rapes and violence against women for fun are so deeply rooted in the psyche of this patriarchal nation that it is casually used to tease or mock a woman, even if she is a high-profile filmmaker or politician.”
The BJP MP is currently gearing up for her highly anticipated film, Emergency, which is all set to make its theatrical release on September 6, 2024. The film, starring Kangana Ranaut, is based on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Earlier, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) had sent a legal notice to Ranaut and her team to take down the official trailer of Emergency. According to them, the trailer inaccurately portrayed historical events, thereby tarnishing the reputation of the Sikh community.
