Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan 2 and Viduthalai Part 1 recently hit screens and set the cash registers ringing at the box office. While both films were of completely different genres, they shared a similarity - they both travelled back in time. A slew of period dramas and films set in the pre-independence era are lining up for release in the Tamil film industry.

Kanguva

One of the most hyped projects of Suriya, Kanguva is set in different timelines. The Siva directorial is not just a fantasy drama, but a significant portion of the film is set in an imaginary world, which is set to date centuries ago. The big budget extravaganza stars Disha Patani as leading lady and will be released in ten languages.

Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan is back in his iconic avatar of freedom fighter and vigilante Senapthy in the Shankar directorial. A part of the project is said to revolve around the pre-independence era and Senapathy will once again take on corruption with his iron hands. The film has an ensemble cast.

Thangalaan

Chiyaan Vikram will be seen as a leader of an oppressed community in the film, which is set against the backdrop of Kolar Gold Fields in the pre-independence era.  The plot is inspired by real lives of mine workers in the time and their struggles. The promos and the posters of the film have already set the internet on fire.

Dhanush's Captain Miller is set in the 1940s and the plot is said to be loosely based on the LTTE leader of the same name. However, an official confirmation on the same is awaited from the film's director Arun Matheswaran, who has remained tight-lipped about the film. Captain Miller stars Shiva Rajkumar and Sundeep Kishan.

If the buzz is to go by, Vetri Maaran's Vaadi Vaasal is set in the time period between 1960 and 1970 when the Tamil Nadu politics had a major churning. This will be the director's maiden collaboration with Suriya and expectations are soaring high from the project even before its shoot.

Mark Antony

Adhik Ravichandran's Mark Antony which revolves around time travel, through a telephone stars Vishal and SJ Suryah in the lead. The retro look of the actors is already a hit among the audience and the post-production of the film is in full swing.

Jigarthanda Double X

The teaser of the sequel to Karthik Subbaraj's Jigarthanda, featured SJ Suryah and  Raghava Lawrence taking on each other with ultimate swag. The one-of-a-kind teaser drops a hint that the film is set a few decades ago. Jigarthanda Double X is one of the most awaited films of the year.
