Kannada films and series in January 2024 week 2: Available in theatres and on OTT

It is the Sankranti/Pongal weekend and this time around, there are no straight Kannada films in theatres to give the big-ticket releases from across the boarder some form of competition. It was in 2022 that Daali Dhananjaya brought Orchestra, Mysuru to theatres for the festivity. The film got a lot of love, especially after its OTT outing, but the box office clearly belonged to Vijay’s Varisu, Ajith’s Thunivu, Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Veera Simha Reddy and Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya. This year, there are quite a few players seeking a bite of the Sankranti market, including Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram, Saindhav, Naa Saami Ranga, and Dhanush’s Captain Miller, but most are releasing in Karnataka in their original language only. Here’s a look at the films that will be served with Kannada-dubbed versions this week, as well as the direct OTT content with Kannada audio

HanuMan Prashant Varma Teja Sajja, Amritha Aiyer Theatre January 12
Captain Miller Arun Mattheshwaran Dhanush, Shivarajkumar Theatre January 12
The Legend of Hanuman Sharad Devarajan, Jeevan J. Kang and Charuvi Agrawal Damandeep Singh Baggan, Sharad Kelkar, Sanket Mhatre Disney+ Hotstar January 12

A Telugu original superhero film, Hanu-Man has Teja Sajja in the lead as Hanumanthu, a youth in a fictional village called Anjanadri, who is bestowed with the powers of Hanuman and fights to keep his village safe. The film by Prashanth Varma also stars Amritha Aiyer, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, Vennela Kishore, Raj Deepak Shetty, Vinay Rai, among others.

Captain Miller

Arun Mattheshwaran’s film with Dhanush in the lead has Century Star Shivarajkumar in a pivotal role and, hence, will have to be released with a Kannada version in Karnataka. This Tamil original period film is about Analeesan Eesa, a former British soldier called Captain Miller, and his attempts to protect his village from the British, who are determined to loot a treasure that’s been hidden and protected by the villagers. Captain Miller’s ensemble cast also includes Sundeep Kishan, Priyanka Arul Mohan, Aditi Balan, Nassar, Vinoth Kishan, John Kokken, etc.

The Legend of Hanuman – Season 3

The third season of the Disney+ Hotstar show will explore Hanuman’s fight with Ravana in Lanka. The animated series created by Sharad Devarajan, Jeevan J. Kang and Charuvi Agrawal is a depiction of Hanuman’s transformation from mighty warrior to god and more. Season 1 and 2 had 13 episodes each that dropped altogether and the same can be expected for Season 3 too.
