After a lacklustre first half of 2025, all eyes are now on the releases in the second half to see if audiences will return to theatres. Last year, the Kannada film industry had a similar slump, with things getting better only in August, when Duniya Vijay’s Bheema came out. This time, the hope is that there will be a slightly earlier revival, with Yuva Rajkumar’s sophomore project Ekka expected to turn the tide around. There are a bunch of Kannada original films releasing in July 2025, each of which, is heading into a box office clash with big-ticket titles.
Kicking it off is debutant director Dhiraj MV with his new-age political satire Kapata Nataka Sutradhari. Dhiraj plays the protagonist in the film, which revolves around the fallout of a Muslim man getting stuck under a revered statue of an elephant at a historical Hindu temple. The film hits theatres along with the latest instalment in the Jurassic World franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, which has received encouraging reviews from its premieres. There’s also Metro… In Dino and Thammudu, among others to contend with.
National Award-winning filmmaker MansoRe’s latest is a deep dive into relationships and the true meaning of togetherness, told in a mix of his unique style and a more commercial approach. The film stars Vijay Krishna and Priyanka Kumar, as they set off on a journey that will give them memories to cherish and help understand each other better. Doora Theera Yaana’s big competition at the box is James Gunn’s Superman.
Yuva Rajkumar’s much-awaited sophomore project, Ekka, directed by Rathnan Prapancha fame Rohit Padaki, is, according to the official synopsis, a tale of a man who gets caught in Bengaluru’s underworld. He’s got Sanjana Anand and Sampada Hulivana along with him on the cast. The other big release that week will be debutant Kireeti’s Junior, which began as a Kannada-Telugu bilingual, but is now releasing in 5 languages. Kireeti is the son of mining baron and politician G Janardhan Reddy, so, rest assured, the release of the film, which also stars Sreeleela, will be massive.
This one came out of the blue. It’s a Raj B Shetty production, written and directed by actor JP Thuminad. The team has only revealed a title poster and a peppy dance number, but by the looks of it, it will be a comedy drama surrounding events at a family event. Su From So, will have Pawan Pawan Kalyan’s Hari Hara Veera Mallu, Mahavatar Narsimha, Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar 2 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps for company.
