Udhayanidhi Stalin's Kannai Nambathey, which is helmed by Mu Maran of Iravukku Aayiram Kangal fame, is all set to hit screens on March 17. The team made the announcement on their social media page and also revealed that the film has been censored with U/A certificate. Kannai Nambathey is a crime thriller, which stars Udhayanidhi Stalin and Aathmika in the lead. The star cast includes Bhumika Chawla, Srikanth, Prasanna, Sathish, Subiksha, Vasundhara to name a few.

The film has been long in the making and the work began in 2018. Udhayanidhi Stalin had called the film a long journey and quite a challenging one at that, with the pandemic-induced lockdowns and other bottlenecks in between.

During the pre-release event, Udhayanidhi said, " Maran had first approached me with a love story. I was quite taken aback and asked if he had indeed made Iravukku Aayiram Kangal. When we began work on the film, almost five years ago, I wanted to do a crime thriller. I told him I wanted the film to have edge-of-the-seat moments until the final scene. Later, he narrated the story of Kannai Nambathey and liked the film."

Since the film has been long in the making, Udhayanidhi said that he had his own doubts about the film's fate." I doubted if the film would ever release, the audio release seemed like a distant dream. The film has only one song though the album has two." Music for the film is by Siddhu Kumar and cinematography is Sridhar and Jalandhara Vasan.

Udhayanidhi added that he has experimented in the film with five get-ups. "What I have done in this film is that I appear in five looks- one is for this film, the other one in Kalanga Thalaivan get-up, Nenjukku Needhi get-up and Maamannan get-up. Maran, the director, has come to the shooting spots of all the above-mentioned films and requested me that Prasanna has given the dates and we can wrap up the shoot. He would say the same to Prasanna. We would shoot during the nights on roads and it would go on till the wee hours of morning."

He said that the film will be difficult to follow if someone were to look at their phone for two minutes and that it would indeed have them glued to their seats. The film is bankrolled by V N Ranjith Kumar under Lipi Cine Krafts banner.
