The crime drama directed by Roby Varghese Raj and produced by leading man Mammootty is the Megastar’s highest grossing film ever

A police procedural based on a real-life group of cops tasked with tracking down dangerous criminals - Megastar Mammotty’s Kannur Squad was a runaway hit at the box office when it released in September this year. The third production venture of his Mammootty Kampany, Written by director Roby Varghese Raj’s brother Rony David Raj, along with Mohammed Rafi, Kannur Squad is based on true events involving a special investigative team under Kannur SP S Sreejith.
The film’s digital rights had been picked up by Disney+Hotstar and November 17 was announced as the streaming date. It was thought that Kannur Squad would only be released in its Malayalam original version, as much of its action unfolds in the heartland of north India’s Hindi speaking belt, but according to new reports, the film will also stream in a Hindi dubbed version. The streamer normally releases films in the original language, plus dubbed versionsto cover the other south languages and Hindi as well, which is likely to be followed for Kannur Squad, in which case, there will be Tamil, Telugu and Kannada audio as well.
In the film, Mammootty plays ASI George Martin, whose team is tasked with finding the men behind a gruesome home invasion that resulted in the death of one of the occupants and left others grievously injured. Determined to outsmart the cops and cross over into a neighbouring country, the perpetrators take off on a journey across several states, with George and his team on hot pursuit in their trusted Tata Sumo. Amid differences between team members and scant support from superior officers, George and co must find a way to track down the culprits and regain the respect of the department. Along the way, a Hindi speaking constable is assigned to help the team navigate through those areas, which may now stick out like a sore thumb in a dubbed version.
Kannur Squad, which has music by Sushin Shyam, also stars Kishore, Arjun Radhakrishnan, Azeez Nedumangad and Rony in pivotal roles. The film is likely to get a sequel.
