The much-awaited OTT release of Malayalam superstar Mammootty's latest hit Kannur Squad didn't happen as expected this week . With the South movies debuting on the streaming platforms within four weeks after their theatrical release, many expected Kannur Squad to follow suit.
However, fans will have to wait for the digital premiere of Kannur Squad. With the movie still going strong in cinemas across Kerala, the filmmakers seem to want to make the most of its box-office success.
According to some reports, the movie will only arrive on streaming after an exclusive 42-day run in theatres. Since the movie hit the screens worldwide on September 28, it might become available for streaming on Disney+Hotstar by the end of November second week.
Even though the distributors and exhibitors have long demanded that all new Malayalam movies maintain the 42-day OTT release window, not many producers have shown a willingness to follow the rule. However, Mammootty seems to be setting a new precedent with Kannur Squad.
In addition to playing the leading role, Mammootty has also bankrolled the movie under his home production banner Mammootty Kampany. This is the third movie to roll out from his production company.
Mammootty Kampany's last two movies Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam and Rorschach also garnered a lot of critical acclaim and went on to achieve significant commercial success at the box office. However, Kannur Squad has become the biggest hit of Mammootty this year.
Kannur Squad is going strong even in its fifth week. The movie has retained more than 130 screens and showing good occupancy across across Kerala.
According to reports, Kannur Squad has grossed over Rs 80 crore from its worldwide ticket sales so far. It remains to be seen whether the movie will hit the Rs 100 crore milestone at the box office with two more weeks of theatrical run.
Helmed by Roby Varghese Raj, the movie also stars Kishore, Vijayaraghavan, Rony David Raj, Azeez Nedumangad, Shabareesh Varma, Sarath Sabha, and Sunny Wayne.
