2022 has been a watershed year for Kannada Cinema with the industry securing not one but multiple successes at the box office. Kicked off by the Puneeth Rajkumar-starrer James earlier this year, Prashanth Neel took on the mantle with his magnum opus K.G.F: Chapter 2 and set new precedents for the Kannada Film Industry and the 'pan-Indian' market, in general. Films like Vikrant Rona, Rakshit Shetty's 777 Charlie, and others too followed suit and made significant contributions to the collective success.
And to make things only better, Rishab Shetty's Kantara emerged as a one-of-a-kind phenomenon at the box office and took the entire world by storm. The film managed to defeat all the initial expectations and became one the most talked-about films of the year so far - the box office collections too reflect the love that the global audience has showered on the movie.
Having previously beaten several box office records, Kantara has another cap in its feather as it now becomes the highest-grossing film of all time in Karnataka. Yes, according to the latest trade reports, the Hombale Films' production has surpassed its own mega venture KGF 2 in terms of net and gross collections of a film of the Kannada language.
Kantara completed 50 days of its theatrical run on November 18 and also managed to own a rather impressive record to its name around the same time. As of November 19, Rishab Shetty's film has collected approx. Rs. 160 crores (net) at the domestic box office and shot past KGF 2 (Kannada) which earned close to Rs. 154 crores.
KGF 2, despite being a Kannada film, ended up being a massive success as a dubbed release in Hindi which collected over Rs. 435 crores during its theatrical run. The Rocking Star Yash-starrer is among the top 5 all-time highest-grossing Indian films with over Rs. 1200 crores to its name in box office collections.
Kantara, on the other hand, is inching towards the Rs. 400 crores (gross) mark worldwide and is expected to reach the target within the next few days. The film is likely to release on OTT on November 24 but would have achieved several feats during its 8-week run in theatres.
