One is likely to soon run out of adjectives to describe the phenomenon of Kantara as the film records yet another stellar performance at the box office. With the Kannada version already proving its might all over the world, the newly released Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil dubbed releases too have shined the brightest: as per the latest trade reports, Kantara has outperformed both Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Godfather by a huge margin with respect to the domestic box office collections.
The same trade reports reveal that the film has grossed over Rs. 23 crores on Sunday, October 16 (Day #17), with the original Kannada release crossing the Rs. 10 crore mark for the very first time since its release (on September 30). To add to the delight, both Kantara Hindi and Kantara Telugu have fetched excellent collections on Sunday with Rs. 4 crores and Rs. 5 crores respectively and the current early estimates suggest that the domestic net value collections of the film are Rs. 19.50 crores. Kantara, judging by these numbers, has collected approx. Rs. 112 crores in India so far and the worldwide numbers are now inching merrily toward the Rs. 150 crore mark!
Kantara Tamil, on the other hand, is reportedly off to a relatively slow start and has grossed a little over Rs. 1 crore so far. The city of Chennai is currently hosting all four versions of Kantara and this could be one of the main reasons for the gradual growth of the Tamil version.
Needless to say, the film is still the strongest box office contender in Indian cinema halls and is likely to remain so for quite some time. As far as the Kannada Film Industry is concerned, Daali Dhananjaya’s Head Bush, which is set to release on October 21, should offer stiff competition but the makers gangster film would certainly be wary of the long-sustaining impact of Kantara. Although both films are starkly different from one another in terms of subject matter, tone, and scale, Kantara has set a strong precedent for the audiences in terms of quality and performances and Head Bush is likely to encounter a kind of comparison in the initial few days. On the other hand, Dhananjaya and Co. would also feel glad about the air of optimism that the Rishab Shetty film has brought about and look to leverage the same during their run in the theatres.
