It looks like Dhanush’s Idli Kadai is doing well in Tamil after all despite facing stiff competition from fellow actor-turned director Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1. Both the films debuted in theatres this week with a one-day gap. Idli Kadai released in theatres on October 1, on the evening of which Kantara had paid premieres, following release on October 2.
Kantara Chapter 1 box office collection in Tamil far lesser than Idli Kadai
Idli Kadai, written and directed by Dhanush, had the benefit of releasing one day prior to the grand, pan-Indian release of Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1. And it looks like that has given some great head start for Dhanush’s humble Idli Kadai.

As per Sacnilk reports, Dhanush's film has seen nearly Rs 13 crore collection in two days in Tamil. However, Kantara's Tamil collection is only Rs 5.25 crore. However, on a larger scale, Kantara: Chapter 1 has seen a collection of over Rs 70 crore, all languages put together. Specific to Tamil, Dhanush’s film is leading the regional race. This could also be due to a certain section of the audience wanting to watch the film in their regional language.
Idli Kadai OTT release:
Idli Kadai’s streaming rights have been bagged by Netflix. An OTT release date for the film is yet to be announced. Starring Rajkiran, Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, Parthiban, Samuthirakani, Ilavarasu, Sathyaraj and others, Idli Kadai is said to be inspired by incidents that Dhanush witnessed during his childhood. The film revolves around a young man who comes back to his hometown after many years and decides to run his father’s simple yet iconic idli eatery. The film is directed by Dhanush, who also stars in the lead role, who also acts as one of the producers. GV Prakash has scored the music.
