Kantara Chapter 1 Day 17 box office: With Thamma releasing in 2 days and set to capture Hindi market, can Rishab Shetty's film get close to or outgross Chhaava this festive season?

Two consecutive days of sub Rs 10 cr net collections later, Kantara Chapter 1’s box office had an uptick yet again on its third weekend. On Saturday, Day 17, the film registered a two-digit net total yet again, but the margin was minimal, considering that there were multiple Deepavali releases in theatres for Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam audiences. Kantara Chapter 1 recorded a net all-India figure of Rs 12.5 cr only, on the back of minor increases across languages.

The film has two more days, October 19 and 20 to capitalize on the lack of competition in the Hindi market, but Ayushmann Khurrana’s Maddock horror comedy film Thamma, which releases on October 21, is expected to change that. Thamma is the latest instalment in their successful Stree universe , which also includes the likes of Bhediya and Munjya. The film, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, will introduce the next chapter in the franchise, and is expected to do well in the Hindi belt.
Unlike KGF: Chapter 2, which was a massive hit in the Hindi region, Kantara Chapter 1 has not been able to make as much of impact. The Kantara prequel received largely positive reviews, but there was far more critique coming its way than the original, about it being style over substance and yet again relying on the last 20-30 minutes of ‘divine intervention’ to save the film. Interestingly, after a successful theatrical run, the 2022 Kantara had been dubbed ‘overrated’ when it eventually made its way to OTT. Back then, the film’s OTT release was also plagued by the copyright case over the Varaharoopam song.
At the end of 2 weeks, Kantara Chapter 1’s worldwide gross stood at Rs 717.5 cr, close to Rs 200 cr less than what KGF: Chapter 2 amassed in the same time frame. With Rishab Shetty’s film set for an October 30 OTT outing, it is unlikely to outgross KGF-2, but Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava record is more likely to be broken. Chhaava is said to have made Rs 809 cr worldwide.
