Kantara Chapter 1, it would seem, is nearing its lifetime box office run end. On Day 22, the film registered its lowest total net collection yet, at Rs 6.25 cr all India. More than half of this came from the Hindi version, with Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam bringing in negligible additions, and the Kannada version slipping below the Rs 2 cr mark. The previous lowest figure was Rs 8.5 crore on the third Monday. With the festive season over and Kantara Chapter 1’s OTT release not far off, collections are expected to dwindle further in the coming days.

According to Sacnilk, Kantara Chapter 1’s current worldwide gross stands at Rs 773.5 cr, whereas the film team’s official PR has sent out a Rs 818 cr claim and that it is now the highest grossing Indian film of 2025. Either which way, this includes close to Rs 200 cr from Karnataka, a figure that is likely to drop significantly if the high court upholds the Karnataka government’s order on capping ticket prices at Rs 200 plus taxes. The case is currently sub-judice and the order has been temporarily stayed, with Kantara makers Hombale Films one of the parties fighting the price cap.
Kantara Chapter 1, which released 3 years after the original Kantara, was reportedly made at a budget of Rs 120 crore, although the team is yet to confirm this. Rishab has hinted that the budget maybe higher than what is being discussed. The team is said to have recovered their investment from the digital and satellite rights, pegged at Rs 125 cr and Rs 80 cr, respectively. The makers are also said to have sold distribution rights in various sectors for undisclosed amounts.
It was reported that the AP/Telangana distribution rights were sold at close to Rs 100 cr, which would necessitate nearly double that figure for break-even. However, as of Day 22, the Telugu versions gross figures stand at only Rs 102 cr. If the distribution figures are true, they are unlikely to recover their investment.
