As Kantara Chapter 1 prepares for its OTT release in only hours, the writing is clearly on the wall. Rishab Shetty’s film will end its run as the highest grossing film of 2025, but may not dethrone movies like Stree 2, Jawan or Kalki 2898 AD to make it to the top 5 ever. Currently, the only film from Kannada in the top 5 is KGF: Chapter 2. According to early estimates, on Day 28, Kantara Chapter 1 is said to have made Rs 2.5 cr net all-India, its lowest collection yet, in what is a clear sign that the film is set to end its run. The film’s all-India net total stood just shy of Rs 600 cr.

Kantara Chapter 1’s Rs 2.5 cr on Day 28 is far less than the Rs 6.15 cr the 2022 Kantara made on the fourth Wednesday. Of course, the difference was that Kantara’s other language releases happened only 2 weeks after the Kannada original came out, so technically, the Hindi version, for instance, was only in its second week. A better comparison would, perhaps, be KGF: Chapter 2, which also had a pan-India release from Day 1. It had made Rs 3.85 cr on Day 28, more than half of which came from the Hindi version.

At the end of Day 27, Kantara Chapter 1’s all-India gross stood at Rs 711.35 cr (Ka: 238 cr, Te: 105 cr, Ta: 70 cr, Ma: 55 cr, Hi: 242 cr). While the Hindi version did just as well as the Kannada original, it is perhaps only half of what KGF: Chapter 2 managed in the same time frame. The Yash film was a different beast at the box office.

Kantara Chapter 1, written and directed by leading man Rishab Shetty, heads to Amazon Prime Video as of 12 am on October 31, 2025, in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam only. The film also stars Jayaram, Hariprashanth, Gulshan Devaiah, Rukmini Vasanth, Rakesh Poojary, Naveen D Padil, Deepak Rai Panaje, Pramod Shetty, Mime Ramadas, among others.
