Kannada actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1 is sitting pretty as the highest grossing Kannada film of the year, having surpassed Su From So, and is currently the second highest grosser from the state, after KGF: Chapter 2. The film had seen a massive week-day slump right from Monday, which continued all the way to Friday, with trackers predicting a revival over the weekend.

Day 9 > Day 8 for Kantara Chapter 1

On Day 9, the second Friday, Kantara Chapter 1 held steady at Rs 22.25 cr, after Thursday’s Rs 21.25 cr, with minor improvement in collections across all languages, except Kannada. The Day 9 break-up was as follows: Kannada: 7.5 Cr; Hindi: 7.25 Cr; Telugu: 3.25 Cr; Tamil: 2.5 Cr and Malayalam: 1.75 Cr. Day 10, the film’s second Saturday and Day 11 Sunday are expected to see a spike again. Early estimates of Day 10 were already in the range of Rs 20 cr with final figures expected late in the night.

Kantara Chapter 1’s box office juggernaut thereafter will depend entirely on the performance of the Deepawali releases. There are films like Bison, Dude, Telusu Kada, Thamma, among others, with the latter, the latest in the Stree Universe, expected to capture the Hindi belt. Kantara’s Hindi collections have not been in the range of KGF-2 and if Thamma’s word-of-mouth is good, it will drop further.

The film also has a 4-week only OTT window for its south versions, so, it is unlikely to pick up after the Deepavali weekend. Trade analysts reckon that the film’s chances of breaking into the Rs 1,000 cr club now look slim, but whether it will be able to outperform the current highest grosser of the year, Chhaava, which released in Hindi only, remains to be seen. Chhaava, reportedly, made around Rs 809 cr, with Saiyaara, also a Hindi only release, in second place at 580 cr. Kantara Chapter 1 is currently in third place.
